NEW YORK: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received South-South Awards-2013 for her important contribution to poverty reduction in Bangladesh.
She received the award at around 9.00pm Monday (New York local time).
Receiving the award the Prime Minister said, “This is not an achievement of mine rather an achievement of whole country.”
She also said: “Due to collective efforts, the number of poor people has come down to 26 percent from 51 percent in 10 years.”
She added that her government is working with the view to total elimination of poverty from Bangladesh.
The South-South Awards is a gala recognizing exceptional contributions from Heads of State and Government, as well as leaders from the private sector and civil society, to the implementation of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and sustainable development around the world.
The theme of this year’s ceremony is “Innovation and Technology for Sustainable Development.”
