DHAKA: A team of River Police arrested two engine drivers of launch ‘Moyur-2’ in connection with the June 29 Buriganga launch capsize that claimed lives of 34 people.
The arrestees are Shipon Hawladar, 45 and Shakil Hasan, 28.
They were arrested from Sutrapur area of Dhaka on Wednesday morning (July 15).
Khandoker Faridul Islam, superintendent of police of Dhaka River Police, Confirmed the matter to Banglanews.
He said both of the accused are named in the case filed over the capsize incident.
Earlier on July 12, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested the master of launch ‘Moyur-2’ Abul Bashar Molla, 65, from South Keraniganj area in the capital.
On July 8, a team of River Police arrested the prime accused Mosaddek Hanif Swad, owner of launch Moyur-2, from a residence in Dhanmondi’s Sobahnbagh area in Dhaka.
On June 29, the Dhaka-bound ‘MV Morning Bird’ launch carrying around 50 passengers from Munshiganj sank in the river after being hit by ‘Mayur-2’ near Shyambazar in the capital’s old town. Later, bodies of 34 people were recovered.
The following day, Shamsul Alam, sub-inspector (SI) of Sadarghat River police station, filed a case with Keraniganj Dakshin police station against seven people.
The accused are- Moyur-2 owner Mosaddek Hanif Swad, Master Abul Bashar Molla, 65, launch master Jakir Hossain,54, engine driver Shipon Hawlader, 45, Shakil Hasan, 28, Sukani Nasir Mridha, 40, and Ridoy (24).
