Shatranji, a traditional fabric of Rangpur, has been recognised as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) got the certificate as the GI product of Shatranji.
It is the second Bangladeshi fabric to have got the status as Jamdani was earlier recognised as GI product
The Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) has registered Shatranji as the country's GI product, DPDT said in a press release on Thursday.
BCIC applied to the DPDT for registration of Shatranji as a geographical indication product on July 11, 2019.
Bangladesh Forms and Publications Office in Tejgaon of Dhaka published 'Shatranji of Rangpur' in GI Journal NO-07 in November last year and in this context, DPDT has given the Geographical Indication Certificate of Shatranji.
On November 15, 2016, Jamdani was recognised as a GI product of the country, paving way for branding the indigenous cloth at home and abroad.
