ACC to launch corruption probe against Aziz, Nizam

Anti-corruption Commission has decided to launch corruption investigations into allegations raised against against ex-army chief Aziz Ahmed and former lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari.

The ACC made the decision today (Sep 4) as initial intelligence findings confirmed the existence of huge illegal assets within the country and abroad in the name of Aziz and Nizam.

Nizam Uddin Hazari, a former Awami League lawmaker from Feni-2 constituency, bought properties in his name, his wife and other family members using illegal funds worth crores of taka, investigation reports confirm.

On the other hand, Aziz Ahmed built or purchased residential buildings in the capital’s Nikunja-1, Nikunja-6 and Mirpur DOHS areas; bought a Tk100 crore bungalow and acquired other assets through illegal funds.

Aziz also bought residences in various parts of the capital for his brothers Haris Ahmed and Tofail Ahmed, in addition to purchasing hundreds of bighas of land for the two. Aziz also has huge assets abroad.

Earlier, in May, the US imposed a travel ban on Aziz and his family members blaming them of committing "significant corruption."
