First group of Bangladeshis leave Iran for home

A group of 28 Bangladeshi nationals, mostly women, children, and patients who had travelled for medical treatment, have begun their journey back home from Iran amid recent tensions in the country.

They departed from Tehran by road at 2:20pm local time on Wednesday (June 25), heading towards Pakistan, according to an official from the Bangladesh Embassy in Tehran who spoke to Banglanews.

The group will cross into Pakistan through the Taftan border in Balochistan and then travel via Karachi to Dubai before flying to Bangladesh.

The repatriation process follows recent unrest in Iran, which prompted several Bangladeshi nationals to express interest in returning home. However, as the situation slightly improved, the number of interested returnees has decreased, according to embassy sources.

So far, around 250 Bangladeshis have formally registered for repatriation, and the Bangladesh government plans to bring them back in phases.

Currently, an estimated 2,000 Bangladeshis reside in Iran, including around 400 in Tehran. The Bangladesh Embassy has 672 officially registered nationals, among them 66 students.

Foreign Ministry's Call for Registration

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged all Bangladeshis in Iran who wish to return to contact the Bangladesh Embassy in Tehran as soon as possible with the required information for registration.
