SYLHET: The authorities closed Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (SUST) for indefinite period and asked students to leave the halls following a Chhatra League gunfight that killed one and hurt proctor among 9 Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Sumon, a student of Sylhet International University.
Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital emergency unit doctor told banglanews that Sumon was rushed to the hospital immediately after he sustained bullet injury in the clash. Few moments later he succumbed to his injuries.
Earlier, two rival groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student affiliate of ruling Awami League, locked into clashes on SUST campus at 11:00am.
According to Campus sources, two rival groups of SUST BCL, led by Sumon and Nayeem, locked into sporadic clashes and gunfight in the morning inside the university over establishing supremacy on the campus along with hall possession.
The two groups, at that time vandalized at least 40 rooms of Shah Paran Hall of the university, according to the sources.
Jalalabad Thana Officer-in-Charge Akhter Hossain said police is trying to take the situation under control.
