3 remanded in blogger Niloy murder case

DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed three persons on five-day remand each in a case filed over the murder of secular blogger Niladri Chattopadhyay Niloy.

Judge Kaisarul Islam of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court of Dhaka passed the order after IO (investigation officer) of the case inspector Mahbubur Rahman produced them before the court with a 10-day remand plea for each.

The remanded are Mufti Maulana Abdul Gaffar, Mortuja Foysal Sabbir and Tarequl Islam Tareq.

The trio, already, have confessed their issue of threat to Niloy and also about their involvement with the murder.

Police, however, took them on remand to quiz for more information about the incident.

In the night of November 17, law enforcers detained Mufti Maulana Abdul Gaffar from Sonargaon of Narayanganj, Murtaza Foysal Sabbir, who is also a ward unit Chhatra Shibir leader, from Kanchpur of Narayanganj.

On the other hand, former secretary of Chittagong’s Sitakunda Thana unit Chhatra Shibir Tarequl Islam Tareq was held from Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong district on Wednesday morning.

However, Mufti Maulana Abdul Gaffar issued death threat to Niloy over Facebook while Murtaza Foysal Sabbir and Tarequl Islam Tareq claimed the murder from the Facebook page of Ansar Al Islam.

On August 7, the 40-year-old secular blogger Niloy was hacked to death at his flat in Dhaka by four assailants.
