CHITTAGONG: Two defeated mayoral candidates Thursday opposed in writing an appeal for repealing Mayor Manjur’s case of information holdback filed with a Chittagong court.

The case has been filed against him on charge of concealing information and submitting wrong affidavit in poll declaration.

Former mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Professor Mofazzal Hossain Bhuiyan placed their demur with the court of Election Tribunal and first Joint District Judge Golam Faruk.

The court fixed October 5 for hearing both the petitions.

Earlier on July 18, Barrister Chowdhury Mohibul Hasan Nawfel, on behalf of former Chittagong Mayor AMB Mohiuddin Chowdhury, sued his successor M Manjur Alam for allegedly lying on oath to stand in the race for mayoral seat in the just-held Chittagong City Corporation elections.

Later on August 17, M Manjur Alam appealed to the court for scrapping the case.

The court fixed September 1 for next hearing on the case. The judge had taken the case into the cognizance and fixed September 23 for hearing.

Mayor’s Lawyer advocate Nurul Islam told banglanews that “the plaintiff dismissed in their written demur our arguments which we placed in the case-quashing petition”.

He informed the same speech was in the written objection of the other candidate, Professor Mofazzal Hossain Bhuiyan. The remaining five mayoral candidates sought more time for placing their statements.

The plaintiff’s lawyer, Advocate Sheikh Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury, said, “We placed our written demur before the court with all documents of the allegation filed.”
