DHAKA: The 37th death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam is being observed Tuesday, the 12th Bhadra in Bangla calendar, across the country in a befitting manner.

Nazrul Islam, mostly known as rebel poet, died in Dhaka on August 29, 1976. He was buried with state honour on the premises of Dhaka University central mosque.

Various socio-cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the death anniversary of the national poet. Bangladesh Beter, Bangladesh Television (BTV) and private TV channels are airing special programmes highlighting life and works of the national poet.

The day’s programme is set to begin through placing of wreaths at the poet’s grave in the morning. Other programmes include Qurankhawani, offering Fateha, discussion meetings and cultural functions.

Dhaka University (DU) also has chalked out an elaborate programme marking the day.

The teachers, students and officials of the DU are set to gather at the foot of Aparajeo Bangla at 8:45am from where Vice- Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddiqiue to lead a procession to the poet’s mazar to place wreaths and offer Fateha there.

Bishwa Bangali Sammelon, South Asia Literature and cultural Parishad and Wonders’ Media are scheduled organize a discussion jointly on the graveyard premises of the poet.

Bangla Academy, Nazrul Institute and Shiplakala Academy and other organisations are likely also observe the day in a befitting manner.

Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was born at Churulia in Bardhaman of West Bengal on 11 Joistha in Bengali year 1306 (May 24, 1899).

Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman brought the poet to Dhaka from Kolkata in 1972. Bangabandhu also provided a residence for the family of the poet at the city’s Dhanmondi and took all out initiatives for his treatment.

The poet of equality and humanity, Nazrul was not only the symbol of struggle and equality but also a symbol of youthfulness and love.

Nazrul’s inspirational poems and songs inspired the freedom-loving people of the country towards the nation’s struggle for independence leading to the War of Liberation.
