97pct MPs involve in negative actions

DHAKA: Quoting the latest report of TIB, Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan) general secretary Dr Badiul Alam Majumder on Saturday said around ninety-seven percent lawmakers involve in negative activities.

He was addressing a roundtable titled “Necessity of MP Behaviour Act” at Jatiya Press Club around 10:00am.

He said that TIB (Transparency International Bangladesh) surveyed in 149 constituencies out of 220 in 44 districts. Of the 149 lawmakers, 141 are male and eight female while 136 are treasury bench lawmakers (27 ministers or state ministers) and 13 opposition lawmakers.

The survey was held on 149 seats of 220 in 44 districts of the country. 136 MPs are from ruling party and rests of 13 are from opposition. There are 27 ministers and state ministers and all of them are alleged.

The survey report claimed that 97 percent MPs were involved in negative activities while seven out of eight female parliament members were unleveled the in negative activities.

Badiul also said there are some specific provisions regarding responsibly of MPs in the parliament but there is none to ensure MPs activities in outside the parliament.

So, we demanded formation a law in this manner as private bill, he added.

He opined that a specific code of conduct for lawmakers remain in India and many other countries.

With former Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda in the chair, the roundtable was attended, among others, by Executive Director of TIB Dr Iftekharuzzaman, former adviser of the caretaker government M Shafi Sami and former justice Kazi Ebadul Haque.
