Kylian Mbappe struck a hat-trick and reached 60 Champions League goals as Real Madrid demolished Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan.
The France captain opened the scoring from the penalty spot early on after home goalkeeper Sherkhan Kalmurza rushed off his line and clattered into Franco Mastantuono.
Mbappe doubled his tally in the 52nd minute, racing onto Thibaut Courtois’ long ball before delicately lifting it over Kalmurza.
Kairat briefly thought they had a lifeline when Valeri Gromyko appeared to be fouled by Dani Ceballos, with the referee awarding a penalty. However, the decision was overturned following a VAR review.
Mbappe missed a clear chance to complete his treble when he dragged a shot wide with the goal open, but later made no mistake from close range to seal his third of the night.
Substitutes Eduardo Camavinga and Brahim Diaz added further goals in the closing stages. Camavinga nodded home from inside the area, while Diaz calmly finished into the bottom corner from Gonzalo Garcia’s pass, consigning Kairat to their heaviest ever defeat in European competition.
The emphatic victory provided a timely boost for Xabi Alonso’s side after their 5-2 derby defeat to Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Saturday.
Mbappe’s goals were his 58th, 59th and 60th in the Champions League, moving him past former Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller into sixth place on the competition’s all-time scoring chart.
