Three madrasha students were killed and 27 others injured after a truck carrying them overturned in Bhaluka of Mymensingh on Sunday (yesterday) night.
They were on their way back home after attending the Bishwa Ijtema in Tongi.
The deceased were Nayeem, 13, hailed from Gafargaon upazila of the district and Sanaullah Sajal, 19, and and Fazlu Haque, 18, both hailed from Bhaluka upazila. They were the students of Jamia Islamia Darus Sunnah Qawmi Madrasa of Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh district.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Valuka Highway Police Ataur Rahman confirmed the matter to Banglanews today (February 5).
He said a total of 30 students of the madrasha went to the Ijtema venue in Tongi to join Akheri Munajat.
Due to the transport crisis, the students were returning home by the truck after the munajat. When the truck reached the Dhalibari intersection around 11:30 pm, a covered van in front of the truck took sudden a U-turn, the driver of their vehicle lost control and it overturned, leaving Nayeem dead on the spot and 12 others injured, he said.
The injured were first taken to Bhaluka upazila health complex and later shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH).
Legal action is being taken over the incident, OC added.
