Email threat: Release 4 Jamaat leaders before Eid or face countrywide serial attacks

DHAKA: An anonymous cyber-warrior emailed a threat that important establishments would be blown up in serial attacks if the detained four top Jamaat-e-Islami leaders are not set free before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.

The email containing the threat was sent in to the email account of Law Commission Chairman Justice Abdur Rashid on August 25. He first saw the email on Tuesday morning.

Shortly after getting the mail, Justice Rashid informed Registrar of the International Crimes Tribunal Shahinur Islam about the matter, as the tribunal is holding trial of the Jamaat leaders on war-crime charges.

Security measures of the tribunal were beefed up as the matter was brought to the knowledge of the security personnel.

Shahinur Islam told banglanews24.com.bd that it is being considered with “high importance” and the departments concerned were informed.

The email message, headlined “Simultaneous attacks will be launched”, was sent from [email protected] with the codename MDMT written in the place of sender. Besides, four mobile-phone numbers were put in the message:  01715822431, 01923479623, 01822378299 and 01720940176.

The email message reads: “Different important buildings across the country will be blown up if our four national leaders are not released before Eid. And attacks will be launched on you and police.”

The copies of the message, written in Bengali using English alphabet, were also sent to some other addresses.

Jamaat chief Motiur Rahman Nizami, Secretary-General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed and Nayeb-e-Ameer Delwar Hossain Sayedee were arrested on June 29 on charges of hurting religious sentiments of Muslims through their perceived blasphemous comments.

Later, assistant secretaries-general Mohammad Kamaruzzaman and Abdul Quader Mollah were arrested from the High Court gate on July 13 in a murder-and-arson case filed with Pallabi thana by an injured freedom fighter in January 2008.

All the five were later put to trial at the tribunal on charges of crimes of the 1971 Liberation War times.
