KOLKATA: The left-front government of Tripura has taken a number of initiatives to commemorate the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, as the eastern Indian state was a citadel for the freedom fighters.

A 52-foot-tall liberation memorial would be built at Bilionia Chottakhola which can be sighted from Noakhali and Feni frontier districts of Bangladesh, a competent source said.     

The monument marks Tripura people assisting the Indian soldiers and Bengali freedom fighters during the liberation war against the Pakistani occupation force, the source added.

Forest minister Jiten Sarker, the person responsible in this regard, told banglanews that a Memorial Park and a Museum would also be set up on 20 hectares of land at the Bilonia Chottakhola site.

A portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of Bangladesh, would be set up at the park.

The arms used in the liberation war, a few pictures and newspaper clippings would be put on display in the museum.

Dr Dipu Moni, foreign minister of Bangladesh, will formally lay the foundation-stone of the memorial park.

The freedom fighters and joint forces of Indian troops set up camp on the park site in the hinterland and fought against the Pakistani military in 1971 to liberate Bangladesh.
